Burleson sits where three kinds of country meet. West of town is the Grand Prairie, with thin loam over limestone and pasture that fills in with cedar and mesquite. Through the middle runs the Eastern Cross Timbers, a band of post oak and blackjack oak on sandy, acid soil that is never much more than 15 miles wide. East toward Mansfield the ground turns to deep black clay. Each one clears differently.
Mesquite and cedar come out with the roots, or they grow right back. A dozer blade or an excavator bucket pulls the whole root ball, where a mower or a chain would only shave the top. Post oaks and blackjacks are a different call. They are slow growing, worth keeping when they are healthy, and Fort Worth protects the big ones by ordinance. Inside Fort Worth, yes in most cases. The city's urban forestry ordinance applies to clearing all or part of a property and to removing any tree six inches or larger in diameter. A single-family or two-family lot of one acre or less is exempt. Post oaks and blackjack oaks of 18 inches and other protected species of 24 inches need a permit from the urban forestry administrator, and the city expects half of the post oaks and blackjacks on a site to stay. Clearing first and asking later means an after-the-fact permit at double the fee.
Burleson does not publish a private-lot tree removal permit in its zoning or subdivision regulations, though a platted or site-planned project is asked to keep tree cover where it can. Confirm with the city before clearing a lot inside the limits. Burning the brush is its own question. Johnson and Tarrant County sit in the DFW ozone nonattainment area, so state rules only allow burning land clearing brush on site when no practical alternative exists, and both counties spend long stretches under burn bans. We haul it instead.
Johnson County grew about 21 percent between 2020 and 2025, and Burleson grew close to 20 percent in the same stretch. That growth shows up as new houses on lots that were pasture or brush a year ago. Lot clearing for a build means taking out the brush and unwanted trees, pulling the stumps, and leaving ground a builder can grade. We clear the lot, then cut the building pad and set the drainage on the same visit when the plan calls for it.
Timing matters when oaks are involved. The beetles that spread oak wilt fly from February through June, so the Texas A&M Forest Service says to avoid cutting or wounding oaks in those months and to paint any cut right away. Live oaks can die within three to six months of infection. On a lot where oaks are staying, ask us to schedule the clearing outside that window. Cuts on any oak that stays should be painted the same day, and we work that into the job. The brush and stumps leave on our trucks and trailers, and the lot is ready for the excavation and dirt work crews.
