Fill dirt delivery starts with a load of clean dirt from a local pit or one of our own digs. We dump it where the truck or the trailer can safely reach. Then our machines push it out and pack it in lifts, so it holds instead of settling later. We run small residential loads for a low spot in a yard, and full site fills for a new build.
Access decides how the load lands. A narrow gate, a soft back yard after rain, or a low power line will stop a loaded trailer. In those spots we drop the dirt on the drive and move it in with a skid loader. In Fort Worth and the south side, a truck that sits in the street needs a Temporary Street Use Permit. That permit takes 3 to 5 business days and costs $112.50.
Common fill dirt is the answer for most yard work. It fills low spots, old holes, washouts, and the shell of a pool that is coming out. We use it under drives and around foundations where the dirt only has to hold shape. If you are removing a swimming pool, common fill packed in lifts is what goes back in.
Select fill is a different material, and a builder or engineer calls for it under slabs and pads. TxDOT Item 132 caps Type A material at a liquid limit of 45 and a plasticity index of 15. Low plasticity matters because our clay swells wet and shrinks dry, and a slab feels that movement. Select fill goes down in lifts and gets compacted, the same as a pad for a new building. The load comes straight from the pit, and the pit ticket shows what it is.
The math is simple. Measure the length, the width and the depth of the area in feet. Multiply the three numbers, then divide by 27 to get cubic yards. For truck sizes, Custom Truck One Source lists tandem axle dump bodies from 10 up to 16 cubic yards. End dump trailers carry more, and even a short elliptical end dump runs under 30 cubic yards.
Loose dirt in a truck is not the same volume as packed dirt in the ground. TxDOT allows a 16 inch loose layer to make a 12 inch compacted layer. That is roughly a quarter of the volume gone once the machine packs it. A 60 cubic yard pool shell takes more than 60 yards of fill to close out. Our pool removal cost guide runs the same math.
Most of our dirt hauling runs the other direction. A new stock tank or ranch pond puts out more spoil than the site can hold. Foundation digs, pool excavations and grading cuts all make dirt that has to leave. Clean dirt gets reused on the same property when the grade allows it, which saves loads either way. What will not fit goes to a pit or to another job that needs cut and fill dirt work.
Tarrant and Johnson County clay holds water, so a wet load weighs a lot more than a dry one. TxDOT caps a loaded truck at 80,000 pounds gross and 34,000 pounds on a tandem axle group. Wet clay hits that weight before the trailer is full, so we plan the haul around the weather. Loads leave tarped, which is what Turkey Creek Landfill in Alvarado requires at the gate. Concrete rubble rides as its own load, and breaking out an old driveway or slab is a separate job.
