Pond construction is steady work for us around Burleson, TX and out across the rural parts of Johnson County. Landowners call when they need a new stock tank for cattle or a bigger pond for wildlife and fishing. Others call because an old tank quit holding water and the dam has to be dug out and rebuilt. Right now we are digging a very large pond on a ranch in the country south of Fort Worth.
Texas Best Demolition is owned by Monty Cain, who has spent decades in demolition and dirt work around Burleson. He built and sold an earlier demolition company here, Burleson Demolition, and has also run dirt and tree businesses. Pond construction starts with reading the ground and finding where the water already wants to collect on your place. We look at the low spots and the draws, and we watch how rain moves across your acreage. A pond set in the right draw catches runoff from its own watershed and fills without much help from you. A pond in a poor spot stays low all summer, or it blows the dam out in a hard rain.
Once the spot and the size are settled, our dozers strip the topsoil and push it clear of the hole. Excavators dig the basin, and the operator cuts depth and shapes the slopes as the hole opens up. The dirt that comes out of the hole goes into the dam, or it gets spread and leveled on site. When a pond makes more dirt than the job needs, our trucks and trailers haul the extra off.
The clay under most of rural Johnson County holds water well, which is why stock tanks do fine here. Holding water has less to do with luck and more to do with how the dirt goes back in. We build the dam in layers, and each layer gets packed down hard before the next one goes on. Loose fill leaks water, so the dam and the pond floor both get compacted as the pond is built.
Not every acre is the same, and some ground runs sandy or rocky a few feet under the topsoil. We dig test holes before the real digging starts, so we can see what is down there first. If the ground will not hold water, we can move the pond or line the basin with better clay. That call gets made out on the property with you, after we have looked at what the dirt does.
A stock tank for cattle gets built around how the herd is going to use the water every day. One bank is left gentle so animals can walk down to drink without cutting up the edge. A pond meant for fishing or for wildlife usually wants more depth and a steeper drop at the bank. We ask what the pond is for before we settle on shape and size, because the use drives both.
