Concrete removal is one of the most common calls we get in Burleson, TX, and clay is usually why. North Texas clay swells when it rains and shrinks when it dries, so the concrete on top keeps moving. Driveways crack across the middle, and patios sink at one corner until the water runs back toward the house. Once a slab is past patching, the fix is to break it out and reset the ground under it.
We run excavators in every size class, from a Bobcat E88 up to a Kobelco 350 with a breaker. That means a thin patio slab and a thick reinforced foundation each get a machine sized for the job. We start by looking at what the concrete sits on and what has to stay right where it is. Fences, gas lines, sprinkler heads, and the edge of the house all shape the way we break the slab. A saw cut or a clean breaker line splits the part that is coming out from the part that stays. Then an excavator works in from one side and pulls the broken pieces back into a pile.
The rubble goes straight into a roll-off dumpster that we set as close to the work as we can. On bigger jobs we stage two or three cans, so the excavator never sits and waits on a truck. Rebar and wire mesh come out of the pile as the broken pieces get loaded into the container. When the last piece is gone, we grade the dirt and leave the spot ready for the next step.
Driveway removal is the job we do most, and it usually runs from the street back to the garage. A cracked driveway on our clay tends to fail in the same spots again, even after a patch. We break the panels out and load them, then set the base back to grade for a new pour. Patio removal works the same way, with a skid loader when the back gate is the only way in.
Slab removal and foundation removal call for a bigger machine and a heavier hydraulic breaker on the boom. Thick concrete with heavy rebar in it does not pop loose the way a four inch patio slab does. Right now we are breaking out saw cut slab sections from the inside of a standing industrial building. The pieces come out and the dirt underneath gets dug, all with the walls and the roof still up.
