Pool removal is steady work for us in Burleson, TX and across the southwest side of the Metroplex. Most people call us once the pool turns into a monthly bill instead of a place to swim. Partial removal is the choice on most backyard pools, because it costs less and finishes faster. We break the pool walls down below grade and drop the broken concrete into the bottom of the shell. Holes get punched through the floor so water drains through instead of collecting under your new yard. The shell is then filled with dirt and compacted in lifts, and the yard is graded flat on top.
Full removal takes the entire shell out, walls and floor, and every piece of it leaves the property. It costs more than a partial fill in, because there is more concrete to break out and haul away. Full removal makes sense when you want to build on that spot, or when a builder asks for it. We look at the pool and your plans for the yard, then tell you which one fits.
Most pools sit behind a house and a gate, so access decides how the whole job runs. We run excavators in every size class, from a Bobcat E88 up to a Kobelco 350. The compact machines fit through a standard backyard gate, which keeps your fence and side yard in one piece. When the gate is too tight, we take out a section of fence and set it back afterward.
The broken concrete has to come back out the same way the machine went in, past the house. We run three roll-off trucks and about 75 dumpsters, so the rubble leaves while the work is going. Nothing sits in your driveway for a week waiting on a hauler with his own schedule. We set the truck route and the machine path before the first day, so the yard takes less damage.
The fill is the part you live with long after the pool removal is finished and paid for. Dirt dumped in loose will settle for years, and the yard sinks into a dip over the old shell. We place the fill in lifts and compact each lift before the next one goes in on top. Demolition, dirt work, grading and compaction all happen in house, so the same people own the result.
Burleson and the rest of the Metroplex sit on clay that swells when wet and shrinks when dry. Clay moves, so the fill and the grade around the old pool have to send water away from the house. We grade the finished surface so rain runs off the yard instead of standing over the fill. Fill dirt has to come from somewhere, and hauling it in is part of what the job costs.
